CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER
Botswana Bulking Society (B8S) is a financial institution whose principal business is residential and commercial property finance. The Society is in a process of transformation, with the aim of operating along the lines of a commercial bank.
The institution requires a highly competent individual with a strong background in banking, to assume the role of Chief Operations Officer, reporting directly to the Managing Director.

JOB ROLE
The role of the Chief Operations Officer (COO) will be to exercise oversight of the day-to-day activities of the core business of the Society, while ensuring alignment with strategy, under the direct supervision of the Managing Director. The successful candidate will drive high level strategic initiatives, ensuring successful implementation.
Where strategic initiatives involve implementation of projects, the COO will sponsor such projects and provide overall leadership to ensure successful implementation within set timelines and budget. Oversight of Information Technology is also a key responsibility geared at ensuring that the business is fully supported with systems and applications necessary in the medium to long term.

The COO will assume overall responsibility for all banking operations, in the front and back offices to achieve high level business results, ensuring compliance with the relevant regulatory frameworks. Oversight of business operations will include growing the banking business through efficiencies in back office activities, for improved customer service in the front office. Growth in the banking business will be achieved through innovation and introduction of new services and products at retail and corporate or commercial level. 

To ensure alignment and focus on strategic goals, the incumbent will liaise closely with the Heads of Risk and Projects and Transformation. 

The COO will ensure that core business operations are adequately resourced, while bearing in mind cost to income targets. 

On a regular basis the COO will prepare reports to the Board while continuously reporting to the Managing Director. 

DUTIES
The duties of the successful candidate will include:
·         Provision of leadership for the selling of banking, operations, and information technology strategic business objectives for the Society on an annual basis. Annual business objectives must be aligned to long term strategic goals.
·         Coordinates the review of progress of the entire cooperate strategy and periodically reports to the Managing Director and the Board.
·         Through the Head of Banking and the Head of Operations, provides overall oversight of all the business units within the front and back office of the institution ensuring that the back office delivers the efficiency necessary for high level of service in the front office.
·         Serves as the driving force behind development of new business and assigns business objectives to Head of Operations and Head of Banking.
·         Has oversight of information technology systems ensuring availability and cost­-effectiveness of systems and applications to support strategy.
·         Acts as the overall sponsor of projects geared towards the Society's business strategy and reports to the Managing Director and the Board on a regular basis.
·         Coordinates the development of divisional policies and procedures and ensures that they support and complement the Society's strategic business goals, ensuring compliance with all regulatory frameworks that apply to the Society.
·         Submits regular reports on progress in the implementation of the Society's business strategy to the Managing Director and the Board of Directors.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
·         A degree in banking, finance or accounting, or business. A masters degree in a business related field will be an added advantage. 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
·         At least 8 years experience, a minimum of 5 at senior management level in a commercial bank. Must also have a strong financial background. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES
·         Strong organisational skills
·         Thorough understanding of government regulations governing financial institutions
·         Ability to plan banking activities (developing strategies, selling objectives, budgeting and developing policies and procedures)
·         Strong understanding of banking products and services, including competitors' product lines
·         Strong familiarity with e-banking and other channels of distribution for banking products
·         Project management knowledge
·         Solid management and leadership abilities
·         Strong knowledge of back office functions
·         Thorough knowledge of end to end credit risk management
·         High level knowledge of deliverables of core banking systems
·         Must be able to network and build relationships with all stakeholders, including at Manager and Board level as well as at investor and client level in pursuit of business objectives
·         Computer literacy, including in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and some banking applications
·         Understanding of change management principles
·         Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
